Vinyl Upholstery Fabric – Vinyl is often called PVC fabric, or patent vinyl cloth. You can find vinyl fabric available two major varieties on the market in: two-way stretch, which is backed with polyester and is the most common. To sew vinyl fabrics for upholstery covering without permanently marring the fabric surface, there are some precautions you should take.
First step to sew vinyl upholstery fabric is, replace the metal presser foot of your sewing machine to a Teflon one to prevent sticking. Install a No. 11 leather needle in the sewing machine, not a ball point needle. Second, Wipe the surface of the vinyl with a slightly damp sponge. Make sure the vinyl feels moist to the touch, but not wet. Use a strip of water-soluble stabilizer to each of the seam lines and leave to dry.
Third, sew the vinyl on your sewing machine with polyester thread. Use double-sided basting tape to hold the pieces together while sewing instead of needles, which would leave lasting marks. When you are finished sewing, wipe the stabilizer with a wet sponge. Fourth, make repairs in the hand vinyl upholstery fabric pieces that will not fit your machine. Use a No. 11 needle threaded with polyester thread. Cover the area to be sewn with the stabilizer using the previously described method, and remove it when you’re done.
